SOUTH BEND – Two players left Notre Dames program, coach Brian Kelly announced Wednesday.
Sophomore left tackle Jordan Prestwood left for personal reasons, and junior running back Cam Roberson, who suffered a knee injury during spring practice in 2011, will stop playing football because of physical issues.
Jordan is no longer with us. Im not able to get into the specifics of that because of privacy laws, Kelly said. Cam Roberson physically was not able to compete at the level that he felt was necessary to play here at Notre Dame. We are going to pursue a medical hardship for him.
Injury report
Linebacker Danny Spond and tight end Alex Welch were both injured during Wednesdays practice, the Irishs first in pads this fall.
Kelly didnt have full reports on the injuries.
He did say Spond suffered what appeared to be a concussion, and Welch appeared to injure his right knee during the final 11-on-11 session near the end of practice.
In the mix
Running back Cierre Wood was back at practice after missing the first day because of problems with his medical paperwork.
And the senior was part of the group fielding punts as the Irish look for a way to breathe life into a struggling return unit from last year. Wood fielded punts along with senior Theo Riddick and freshmen Davonte Neal and Chris Brown.
We are going to put (Wood) back there and see what he can do, Kelly said. We are going to look at as many guys as we can at this point, and then start whittling it down in a couple of weeks.
Still recovering
Running back Amir Carlisle, who missed spring practice because of a broken ankle, wasnt very active at practice.
Hes still fighting through that foot pain that he has, Kelly said. He has made great progress. We feel like he is going to be ready.
