Grandfather, toddler drown in family pool

GRANGER, Ind. (AP) — Police in northern Indiana say a man and his 18-month-old grandchild have apparently drowned at the bottom of the family swimming pool.

St. Joseph County police say family members found the 55-year-old man and the toddler dead in the pool in the backyard of the man's home in Granger about 7 p.m. Thursday when one of them began looking for the pair after they didn't return from a walk. Granger is about eight miles east of South Bend.

Lt. Matt Blank tells the South Bend Tribune that the drownings were apparently accidental. Police don't know how the man and child ended up submerged in the pool.

Police didn't release the names of the man or child Thursday night.
