Man slain at south-side apartment complex

A man was shot dead early Saturday at an apartment complex on the city’s south side, Fort Wayne police said.

Witnesses told police they heard one shot and then discovered the man in a parking lot of the Coventry Court apartments, said officer John Chambers, a police spokesman.

The shooting was reported at 12:38 a.m. Police and medics were dispatched to the parking lot in the 500 block of Birchtree Lane, near West Paulding Road and Fairfield Avenue.

They found the man lying on the ground suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The man, who was not identified, died at the scene, Chambers said.

Witnesses reported seeing a dark-colored car leave the lot shortly after the shooting, but investigators don’t know whether the car was related to the crime, Chambers said.

Police had no suspects and no motive in the case early Saturday.
