Indiana State Police apprehended a Fort Wayne man who jumped into the St. Joseph River early Sunday in an attempt to evade capture after a brief chase.
A state trooper had pulled over a Ford Explorer near Coliseum Boulevard and Vance Avenue. When the trooper walked toward the vehicle, the driver sped away, authorities said.
The driver traveled north on Hobson Road and eventually into the Canterbury Green apartment complex. There, he exited the vehicle and fled on foot, police said.
Other troopers, including one with a police dog, joined in the pursuit. Officers tracked the man to a tree-lined area along the St. Joseph River. Police said they then heard the driver jump into the river in an attempt to swim away.
Jeremy T. Bolenbaugh, 32, of the 3000 block of Upper St. Joe Center Road, was arrested by Fort Wayne and IPFW police shortly afterward beneath the St. Joe Center Road bridge, the statement said.
Bolenbaugh was preliminarily charged with resisting law enforcement, being a habitual traffic violator, possession of synthetic marijuana and possession of paraphernalia. He is being held without bail at the Allen County Lockup.
