Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick sees the benefits of a scheduling concept that makes his job just a little bit harder each year.

The Irish will play Miami in Chicago this season as part of their Shamrock Series. Notre Dame's schedule each year include six home games, five road games and an off-site game.

Notre Dame has previously played these off-site home games at San Antonio, New York and Washington, D.C.

"This is about taking Notre Dame around the country," Swarbrick said at Thursday's media day. "The geography of the future will reflect that. We're going to move around the country with this thing."

Swarbrick said plans for the Shamrock Series to continue are in place through 2016 with the venues identified for the games but work to be done lining up opponents.

One thing Swarbrick said that has become clear with the off-site games is how the games work best.

"These games work best, clearly, when they tell a story," Swarbrick said. "Army in Yankee Stadium was a classic example of that. Renewing the Miami rivalry is great example of that. Those are the best versions.

"Or having a regional opponent as we did (with Maryland) in Washington, D.C. That creates its own interest. That's when this will work best. If it's just another opponent in another venue, it's a tougher deal."

Swarbrick also said there is still interest in playing Stanford in China, something that had been rumored for next season.

He said Stanford AD Bob Bowlsby leaving to become the Big 12 commissioner put those plans on hold for the moment.
