Highway worker fatally hit on Indiana Toll Road

LAPORTE, Ind. (AP) — State police say a semitrailer fatally struck a highway worker who was standing along the Indiana Toll Road.

Police say 34-year-old Chad Fleager of Lowell was on the entrance ramp to a truck parking lot taking measurements for roadwork when he was hit Wednesday. Police say the semitrailer veered from the right lane when it hit Fleager about a mile from the U.S. 421 interchange in western LaPorte County.

Fleager suffered massive blunt-force trauma injuries and was taken by helicopter to a South Bend hospital, where police say he died a couple hours later.

Fleager was a rental coordinator for RoadSafe Traffic Systems of Crown Point.
