Former Norwell baseball player Josh VanMeter signed with the San Diego Padres on Tuesday.The shortstop, who was drafted in the fifth round with the 148th overall pick, got a $308,000 signing bonus from the Padres.DENVER – Major League Baseball owners have approved the sale of the San Diego Padres to a group that includes the O’Malley family and pro golfer Phil Mickelson.
The Fort Wayne TinCaps organization is a Single-A affiliate of the Padres.
Commissioner Bud Selig announced the endorsement Thursday following an owners meetings in Denver. Under the deal, the group will buy the franchise from John Moores for around $800 million.
Ron Fowler will become the controlling owner.
The new ownership group includes Kevin and Brian O’Malley, the sons of former Los Angeles Dodgers owner Peter O’Malley. Peter and Tom Seidler – the nephews of Peter O’Malley – also will be involved.
The agreement comes months after Jeff Moorad’s attempt to buy the team on a layaway plan collapsed.
The final closing of the sale will be on or before Aug. 31.
