Keys to the game

Two errors in the first inning by Fort Wayne led to two Dayton runs as the Dragons beat the TinCaps 5-1 in front of 7,01 fans Sunday.

Here are the highlights.

Sloppy defense: With one out in the first inning, center fielder Travis Jankowski dropped a fly ball hit by Joe Terry. Juan Perez moved from first to third on the error. Spencer Dickinson then hit a grounder back to the mound. Erik Cabrera threw to second for an out, but Jace Peterson couldn't hold on for a shot at a double play. Perez scored on the play.

Kyle Waldrop then doubled to second. Dickinson originally held up a third, but the relay throw bounced away from first baseman Connor Powers for an error. Dickinson scored to make it 2-0.

Lack of production: The TinCaps have scored one run in the last 16 innings.

The playoff race: Fort Wayne has a 1½ game lead over Lake County and a 3 ½ game lead against South Bend for one of the Eastern Division's final two playoff spots. Fifteen games remain in the regular season.

Quotable

"It's a shame when you have a guy (starter Erik Cabrera) make the pitches to get out of an inning and our defense lets him down."
