Everett Golson, seen here in Notre Dame's 2011 spring game, has been named the starting quarterback versus Navy in the season opener in Dublin, Ireland.

Golson to start for Notre Dame

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly erased the mystery of who will start at quarterback in the season opener.

Kelly announced after practice today that Everett Golson will start when the Irish play Navy on Sept. 2 in Dublin, Ireland.

"He won the job. Andrew did a great job," Kelly said. "It was a tough decision, but Andrew clearly won the starting job."

Golson, a 6-foot, 185-pound sophomore, beat out junior Andrew Hendrix in fall camp to earn the starting nod. Hendrix played in five games last year.

Junior Tommy Rees, who started 12 games last season, is suspended for the first game of the season. Freshman Gunner Kiel will likely preserve a year of eligibility.

For more on Golson being named the Irish's starting quarterback, see Friday's print edition of The Journal Gazette or visit www.journalgazette.net after 3 a.m. Friday.
