HS athletes increase nationally

Participation for prep athletics increased last year to an all-time record of 7,692,520 nationwide, an increase of 24,565.

Girls in sports increased for the 23rd straight year to 3,207,533.

Boys participation fell to 4,484,987 from 4,494,406.

The top sport for girls is outdoor track and field, followed by basketball and volleyball. For the boys, it is 11-player football, outdoor track and field and basketball for the top three sports.
