The TinCaps snapped a four-game losing streak with a 4-1 win at West Michigan in front of 7,123 fans at Fifth Third Ballpark on Thursday.
Fort Wayne (33-26, 64-65 overall) scored all four runs in the eighth inning.
The TinCaps currently hold the Eastern Division’s wild card spot for the second half. Lake County has a half-game lead over Fort Wayne for the top spot among qualifying teams.
The TinCaps lead West Michigan by three games and South Bend by 31/2. South Bend lost 8-5 at LakeCounty in the first game of a doubleheader. Lansing and Bowling Green qualified for the playoffs in the first half.
The TinCaps scored the four runs in the top of the eighth inning when a double by Travis Whitmore scored Travis Jankowski, who had singled and moved to second on a walk by Jace Peterson.
Lee Orr’s single scored Peterson and Whitmore and Austin Hedges’ single scored Yeison Asencio, who had been intentionally walked.
Peterson was 3 for 4 with two doubles, while Hedges was 2 for 4.
Johnny Barbato (6-1) picked up the win with two innings in relief of starter James Needy. Barbato gave up a hit and walked one. Needy didn’t allow a run in six innings of work, giving up six hits. Matthew Stites finished the game, giving up the Whitecaps’ lone run and two hits.
West Michigan (30-29, 66-63) out-hit Fort Wayne 9-8. Fort Wayne stranded seven runners, including three in scoring position.
