Warsaw girls coach jailed on sex charges

Warsaw police have arrested an Edgewood Middle School teacher accused of having a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old former student.

Tyler J. Baatz, 26, faces two felony charges: sexual misconduct with a minor and child seduction.

Warsaw police said they received a report of a possible inappropriate relationship between Baatz and one of his students from last school year. Investigators confirmed the contact through text and phone records, police said.

In an interview with police Tuesday, Baatz admitted to having sexual contact with the girl over the past three weeks at his Warsaw apartment. He also had contact with her at Winona Lake, police said.

Warsaw Community Schools Superintendent Craig Hintz said Baatz taught language arts and coached girls basketball at Edgewood.

“He is on suspension pending the outcome of this matter,” Hintz said.

Hintz said a letter was sent to parents informing them of the situation.

Baatz was being held without bail Wednesday at the Kosciusko County Jail.
