Motorcyclist outruns officer, dies in crash

A man trying to elude a police officer early Wednesday crashed his motorcycle and suffered fatal injuries, the Ashley Police Department said.

Howard W. Squier II, 34, of Orland died at the scene, police said.

About 12:50 a.m., the officer tried to pull over Squier for a traffic violation on North Grand Avenue in Ashley.

Instead of stopping, Squier headed north out of town at a “very high rate of speed” on Steuben County Road 400 West, police said.

Squier turned west onto County Road 700 South and sped out of the officer’s sight. The officer later discovered Squier’s motorcycle, a 2000 Honda, lying on the side of the road, and Squier was found on the other side.

He was not wearing a helmet, police said.

Driver charged in hit-skip injury wreck

A driver who fled the scene of a crash that injured a woman in southwest Fort Wayne now faces a felony charge.

James E. Heroy III, 19, was charged Wednesday with failing to stop after an accident resulting in injury.

On March 10, Heroy was driving east in a 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier in the 3400 block of Taylor Street, near Freeman Street, according to court papers.

He crossed into the westbound lane and collided head-on with a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta. He then fled the scene on foot, records said.

The Jetta driver, Kelsi B. Stephens, broke her lower right leg. She underwent surgery to have a steel rod inserted, running from her knee to her ankle, court papers said.

Heroy, of the 2000 block of St. Marys Avenue, has not been arrested.
