A 47-year-old Fort Wayne man with a history of rape and indecency admitted Friday to exposing himself to two women in two southwest Fort Wayne stores.
Mark V. Michels, of the 3300 block of Chestnut Street, pleaded guilty in the two separate cases. In the first case, he pleaded guilty to felony public indecency. In the second case, he pleaded guilty to felony sexual battery.
According to court documents, Michels was standing outside a Michaels arts and crafts store at 4230 W. Jefferson Blvd. on May 12 and greeted a woman who went inside to do some shopping. He followed her, greeted her again and started a conversation in an aisle. The woman became uncomfortable, turned her back to him and continued to shop.
She turned around and saw Michels exposing himself. He apologized repeatedly and ran out of the store, according to court documents.
Then, in June, an employee at Meijer, 5909 Illinois Road, saw Michels walk toward her, exposing himself, in the shoe department, according to court documents.
According to prison and court records, Michels was convicted of rape in 1984; misdemeanor public indecency in 1994; and public indecency and indecent exposure, both misdemeanors, in 1999. He was also convicted of robbery in 2007 and 2009.
As part of his plea agreement with prosecutors, Michels will be sentenced to 2 1/2 years on one count and two years on the other, with the sentences to be served one after another, according to court documents.
An additional charge of public indecency will be dismissed when he is sentenced next month.
