Golson has good handle on job

Notre Dame's Brian Kelly is as comfortable as a coach can be when a quarterback is making his first college start.

Sophomore Everett Golson, who didn't play as a freshman, will start for the Irish against Navy on Saturday in Dublin, Ireland.

Kelly said he understands that Golson might not be perfect, but he trusts the quarterback to handle the pressures of the job.

"Let's make it clear, he will make mistakes," Kelly said Tuesday. "He's going to make some mistakes, and we know that and we are going to have to obviously try to overcome those.

"Our entire offensive staff, feels as though he's disciplined in his approach; that he understands the routine of the quarterback position that he's going to minimize the mistakes. He's shown that over the past month. If he's not out of character on Saturday, I will safely say, he will do a very good job of taking care of the football."

Kelly said Golson has handled his status as a starter well after he was named to the job over junior Andrew Hendrix last Thursday. Tommy Rees, who started 12 games last season, was not in the running for the starting job because he was suspended for the opener because of an arrest in May.

"I would say that he understands the role of being a leader in our quarterback position," Kelly said. "That quarterback kind of sets it's the tone, if he comes out there and he's not full of energy and he's not excited, that has a tendency to kind of filter through the ranks. And that's never been the case.

"If he showed that at all during his audition, if you will, for the starting job, he wouldn't get it. Because we are not going beg somebody to be the starting quarterback at Notre Dame. He's always had that. Andrew has that. Tommy's always had it. Gunner (Kiel) will have it. All of these guys understand the nuances as it relates to the position."
