Apartments planned for historic downtown building

FORT WAYNE – An apartment complex could spring from a historic building in downtown and pave the way for affordable housing there.

Scott Piepenbrink, who owns the building at 614 S. Harrison St., said Wednesday he has a purchase agreement with Real America Development of Carmel, which plans to renovate the structure to accommodate 44 one- and two-bedroom units.

Real America has nearly 20 income-based rentals in northeast Indiana. It wants to invest $5 million to $7 million on the downtown structure at South Harrison and Pearl streets.

Piepenbrink said the purchase will depend on Real America meeting several conditions, including city approval for the project.
