For the second time in less than six months, a 68-year-old credit union manager was attacked in an attempt to rob Freedom Financial Federal Credit Union, police said.

The woman was ambushed at her home about 7 p.m. Monday, blindfolded, tied up and eventually taken to the credit union at 1802 Inwood Drive, near Coliseum and East State boulevards and Lake Avenue.

Two men told the woman she wouldn’t get hurt if she did what they said. She was then taken in her car to the credit union and forced to help the men rob the credit union of an undisclosed amount of cash, police said.

“That’s not your typical bank robber. They planned it pretty well,” said Raquel Foster, a Fort Wayne police spokeswoman. “This is new. This is something we haven’t seen in Fort Wayne.”

While the woman was not injured Monday, she was hit in the face and head several times in April when a man followed her into the credit union, police said. That man fled when he was unable to get any money, police said.

On Monday, the woman was left at the credit union after the robbery. The two men stole the woman’s gray Chevrolet Impala and used it as a getaway car, police said.

The woman called a neighbor after the suspects left the credit union. The neighbor called police about 9:33 p.m. The employee told investigators the men told her not to call the police.

The car was later found unoccupied by police in the area of Manford Street and Fruehauf Drive, about 3 1/2 miles from the credit union.

Foster said the car was being processed for evidence. Police did not know whether the men used weapons.

“We need for anyone who may have been in the area who might have seen something – we’re asking for them to call,” Foster said. “At this point we have nothing at all.”

Police are trying to determine whether the suspects were caught on any surveillance video. The suspects wore gloves and concealed their faces, Foster said.

She said Monday’s robbery was the fourth time in two years the credit union has been targeted. The same credit union was robbed Nov. 8 and Dec. 16.

“Somebody knows the layout of that bank,” she said.

There were no tracking devices or dye packs inside the stolen cash Monday. “That security measure didn’t seem to exist,” Foster said.
