I noticed this beautiful flower in bloom in my vegetable garden.
I don't remember planting garlic chives there, but it doesn't surprise me. Often interesting plants just show up in my garden.
A watermelon plant also showed up this year. I moved it to a different location because I did have room for it. I now have a tiny watermelon that might grow to a proper size before the end of the season.
I am enjoying the blooms on the garlic chives. It is a late season flowering herb that has a lite garlic flavor and is used in Asian recipes.
A Washington Post article on garlic chives by Barbara Damrosch stated that garlic chives spreads rampantly in some gardens. I will need to keep an eye on this. Perhaps I should remove the dead flowers before they go to seed.
