Update on Angola's Sam Gardner

Here's the latest entry from the page on Caring Bridge for injured Angola football player Sam Gardner.

Your prayers continue to be answered, so please keep praying for Samuel! There is so much good news that I am sending an early update. If you normally read these late in the day, there may be 2-3 updates for you to read to be caught up.

Last night was difficult as I had anticipated it would be, with frequent coughing, gagging, and squirming from discomfort. Not much sleep, but we made it through.

Late this morning they removed the breathing tube -- what an immediate relief! Almost immediately Sam was answering questions with a soft raspy voice, and asking questions of his own, mostly pertaining to what time today would he be going home. Some of his statements make no sense, but many of them are dead on. When I told him that today was August 31st, he immediately followed up with "school starts on the 22nd". He also provided details about the Eastside football team when I mentioned that there was a game tonight.

Consistent with his sometimes oppositional nature, he can be a bit feisty at times, occasionally trying to remove some of the various tubes that are still connected to him. If this continues, it is possible that he may have to be restrained again as he has been for the past two days. He gets frustrated and wants to get out of bed, but it's just too soon for that, and still too soon for visitors.

Just a few days ago, we did not anticipate these positive developments would already be here. But you have been praying, and God has been busy answering your prayers!

Carol is arriving this afternoon to hold down the fort through tomorrow morning. If you see me at the game tonight with family, I will be giving you a "thumbs up" for Sam.
