A knife-wielding man who was threatening people inside a home and threw fireworks at police officers surrendered peacefully Sunday morning after a nearly three-hour standoff.
Fort Wayne police were called at 12:26 a.m. to a home in the 1000 block of Home Avenue, near Broadway south of West Creighton Avenue, for a disturbance where a man threatened a person at the residence and thensaid he was going to commit suicide, police spokeswoman Raquel Foster said in a statement.
When police got to the home, the man refused to comply with officers' commands and retreated inside, the statement said. It said two other adults were able to flee the
home just as police arrived.
The 30-year-old man was seen brandishing a knife as officers surrounded the home, police said, and both the Emergency Services and the Crisis Response teams
were called in.
During the standoff, the man also was observed with a crossbow, told police he had a gun and was throwing fireworks at officers, police said.
Several neighboring homes were evacuated during negotiations with the man.
The man eventually surrendered without incident and was taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation.
No one was injured and police did not find a gun, the statement said. The incident remains under investigation by police.
