2 Indiana women injured in crash sue dairy over smoke

CROWN POINT – Two Indiana woman injured in a highway crash are suing a dairy farm, accusing its owners of negligence in a hay fire that shrouded the highway in smoke.

Nancy Gresham and her daughter Judy Abernathy of Lowell allege in their Lake Superior Court suit that they suffered multiple broken bones in one of a series of Aug. 18 crashes along Interstate 65 that killed one person and injured several others.

It alleges smoke from a hay fire at Bos Dairy LLC obscured drivers’ vision along the highway about 50 miles southeast of Chicago.

The Post-Tribune of Merrillville reports the suit alleges the fire began Aug. 17 and accuses the dairy of being negligent in the hay’s storage.

A message seeking comment was left Saturday at Bos Dairy LLC.
