Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to visit Fort Wayne

Statement as issued Tuesday by Minn Myint Nan Tin, executive director of the Burmese Advocacy Center in Fort Wayne:

The Burmese Community is excited to announce that Nobel Laureate winner and Burma Democracy Leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi will visit Fort Wayne, Indiana on September 25th 2012.

Aung San Suu Kyi will be in the United States to receive her 2008 Congressional Gold Medal Award in Washington D.C on September 20th 2012, she will also be accepting the Global Citizenship Award in New York City on September 22nd, 2012.

Daw Aung Suu Kyi is the daughter of the assassinated Burmese independence leader and Burma national hero General Aung San; She led a mass uprising in Burma called the Four eights (8888) and became chair of the National League for Democracy Party (NLD) which won a landslide victory after popular elections in 1990. However, the military junta in Burma refused to honor the victory and arrested a number of opposition leaders instead, including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. She has spent 15 of the last 21 years under house arrest, from July 20th 1989 to November 13 to 2012. She has made immeasurable personal sacrifice in order to bring democracy to Burma. Her bravery and persistence in the face of violent opposition have been recognized by the community of nations and she has been awarded a total of 132 international awards, including the 1990 Nobel Peace Prize and the United States Congressional Gold Medal.

The people of Burma, including those that have been forced to relocate to other countries are very enthusiastic about the political changes Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is encouraging in Burma. The Fort Wayne Burmese community is looking forward for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to inspire the generation of Burmese born in America. They are optimistic about the future of their homeland.

The Burmese community of Fort Wayne and Indiana-Purdue University of Fort Wayne are the main sponsors of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s public appearance in Fort Wayne. The public speech is an opportunity for the citizens of Fort Wayne and the world to hear her inspiring message of democracy and liberty.
