Arrest made in driveway hit-and-run

Tot upgraded to serious condition; man, 38, jailed

A Fort Wayne man was arrested in connection with a hit-and-run accident Sunday that left a 3-year-old boy in critical condition.

Michael T. Harris, 38, of the 3600 block of Avondale Drive, was preliminarily charged Monday with leaving the scene of an accident causing serious bodily injury and driving while suspended, Fort Wayne police said in a statement.

Harris was backing a van out of a driveway Sunday when he hit Jaime Saldana on a sidewalk in front of a home in the 4900 block of Oliver Street, police said.

Saldana was taken to a hospital and was initially in critical condition but was upgraded to serious condition Monday.

He suffered a head injury, police previously said.

Harris left the scene of the accident before police could get there.

Officers found the van two hours after the accident in the 200 block of West Oakdale Drive, near South Calhoun Street and West Rudisill Boulevard.

Harris is being held at the Allen County Lockup in lieu of $2,500 bail.
