For the past week, as Ive been walking into work, Ive noticed a construction crew at Henrys Restaurant (536 W. Main St.).
At first, it looked as though the workers were building a tiny deck on the back of the restaurant. The next day, I wondered whether it was a small expansion of the restaurant and bar, maybe creating another dining section?
Instead, the new wing of Henrys will give the kitchen more dry storage, as well as a walk-in cooler to provide more space in the kitchen, kitchen manager Shawn Thornton says.
The restaurant is open, and he says he hopes everything will be completed and up to code by October.
Thornton also shared another change hes hoping Henrys makes by November or December: Hes working on persuading the owner to open Henrys four days a week for lunch with a limited menu.
This possibility is still in the discussion stages, and Thornton says he would love to know how people feel about it. If you have an opinion or would like to have another downtown lunch stop, let Henrys know on the restaurants Facebook page. To find it, do a Facebook search for Henrys Restaurant or go to http://on.fb.me/NaIHIa.
Opening
Orange Leaf, a DIY frozen yogurt franchise, opened Saturday at 2870 E. Dupont Road, next to Bandidos. What sets Orange Leaf apart from other frozen yogurt shops, owner Joe Parrot says, is that the yogurt is made fresh in-house.
The store offers 65 flavors to rotate through eight machines, making 16 possible flavors at once. Orange Leaf has 32 toppings, including gummy worms, nuts and fresh fruit.
Parrots favorite concoction is a peanut butter and chocolate swirl yogurt topped with Reeses Peanut Butter Cups, chocolate chips and chocolate syrup.
Customers can share their favorite flavors on the Orange Leaf app available on smartphones. The app, My Orange Leaf, lets users choose their home store, see the days flavor lineup and vote for their favorite flavors.
If you have visited Orange Leaf in another city and they have something you really like, you can go in and comment on the stores application, Parrot says.
Yum-Mees Bakery has opened a second location, this one in Glenbrook Square. The bakery is across from Barnes & Noble, next to Starbucks. This location, which opened Saturday, has the same food items as its State Boulevard location, says Andrew Fisher, counter help at the State Boulevard Yum-Mees and soon-to-be manager of both stores.
Yum-Mees serves cookies, brownies, muffins, pastry items and, the bakerys bestseller, cupcakes. The Glenbrook store will also offer special-order cakes.
Temporary closures
I had received a tip last week that Cindys Diner (830 S. Harrison St.) had appeared closed. Never fear: The downtown breakfast and lunch staple has not closed. The owners were simply on vacation. The diner is reopening at 6 a.m. today.
Starting Thursday, the McDonalds on St. Joe Center Road will be closed for construction.
New hours
East State Coney (2831 E. State Blvd.) has announced new Sunday hours.
Starting this week, the restaurant will be open from noon to 8 p.m. Sundays, manager John Smith says. The store has been open for three years.
Free tasting
Lebamoffs Cap n Cork will have a free beer, wine and liquor tasting from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at 1031 Broadway.
The tasting will feature 16 beers, including fall favorites such as New Belgium Red Hoptober Ale, Samuel Adams Octoberfest and two pumpkin beers. It will also have 13 wines, including four Vine Smoothie options, and 11 liquors, including Smirnoffs whipped and fluffed vodkas.
