Driver admits lesser count in DWI crash into bicyclist

Walter

A man accused of driving drunk and hitting a bicyclist was sentenced in Allen Superior Court to two years in prison.

Andrew J. Walter, 37, of Fort Wayne was sentenced last month to two years in prison, two years on home detention and two years’ probation by Allen Superior Magistrate Judge Samuel Kierns.

Walter pleaded guilty to a Class C felony charge of criminal recklessness. He was originally faced six charges, including operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated causing injury and failure to stop after an accident resulting in serious bodily injury.

Those other charges were dismissed under the terms of a plea agreement.

Walter was arrested in September 2011 after he hit a man riding his bicycle in the 7200 block of West Jefferson Boulevard near Engle Road. The 51-year-old bicyclist, Gary R. Black, was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Walter left the scene of the crash but called police from his home, saying he thought he’d hit something with his car. Damage to his vehicle was consistent with the damage to the bicycle.

Police believe both men were under the influence of alcohol.
