Flooded-out lake landowners seek compensation

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A group of landowners near Grand Lake St. Marys are asking the state Supreme Court to order state officials to compensate them for their losses from flooding.

The court ruled in December that the state Natural Resources Department was required to compensate 87 landowners near the northwest Ohio lake.

A motion filed with the Supreme Court on Thursday alleges the state has been dragging its feet since then and has filed compensation plans for just six of the 87 property owners.

The filing saod one property owner already has died, and every day of delay increases the likelihood of more deaths or owners forced to sell their property.

A message was left with the Natural Resources Department seeking comment.
