The Fort Wayne Fire Department battled a fire 125 W. Dewald St. this morning. Five people were rescued from a roof of the burning home, but firefighters don't know who did the rescuing.

5 saved from roof of burning home

Four adults and a child were rescued from the roof of a burning West Dewald Street home Friday morning, but Fort Wayne firefighters said they didn't do the rescuing.

An unidentified neighbor or passerby extended a ladder to the home at 125 W. Dewald St., which was reported on fire at 8:35 a.m., said Stacey Fleming, a Fort Wayne Fire Department spokeswoman.

Upon arrival, firefighters saw heavy flames and smoke coming from the second floor of the two-story home, the fire department said in a statement. It said the last of the trapped occupants was leaving the roof on a ladder.

Firefighters entered the home, confirmed no one else was inside, and put out the fire, which was under control within 25 minutes, the statement said.

It said the home sustained heavy fire, water and smoke damage. The fire extended to a neighboring house, which was limited to minor exterior damage.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, firefighters said. The Three Rivers Ambulance Authority, Fort Wayne police and Neighborhood Code assisted at the scene. The American Red Cross was called to assist the victims.
