TinCaps win, advance to the championship series

The TinCaps will play for the Midwest League championship.

Fort Wayne scored six runs in the sixth inning on the way to a 13-6 victory against Lake County in Game 3 of the Eastern Division championship Monday at Classic Park in Eastlake, Ohio.

With the victory, Fort Wayne advances to the championship round for the second time in franchise history. Fort Wayne won the title in 2009.

The TinCaps will face Wisconsin. The best-of-five series starts Wednesday in Wisconsin. The first two games – Wednesday and Thursday – will be in Wisconsin. The rest of the series will be at Fort Wayne (7:05 p.m. Saturday for Game 3, and then if necessary Game 4 at 5:05 p.m. Sunday and Game 5 at 7:05 p.m. Monday).

Fort Wayne's Lee Orr got the scoring started with a solo home run to center field in the second inning. It was Orr's third home run of the postseason.

Yeison Asencio and Travis Whitmore reached in the top of the third on infield hits. Austin Hedges had a bloop single to left field to load the bases with one out.

Duanel Jones popped out to second base, but Kyle Gaedele came through with a three-run double to center field to make it 4-0.

Lake County scored a run in the bottom of the third when Jose Ramirez knocked in Alex Lavisky with a double to center field.

Francisco Lindor followed with a single to right field. Asencio threw Ramirez out at the plate.

Lake County got a second run on a single to center field by Jerrud Sabourin.

Jake Lowery hit a ball to shallow left field. There was miscommunication between shortstop Jace Peterson and Gaedele. The ball fell in for a two-run double to tie the game at 4.

Fort Wayne bounced back with the big sixth inning. Gaedele doubled. Tyler Stubblefield walked. Travis Jankowski had a bunt single, extending his hit streak to 22 games, to load the bases.

Peterson then hit a two-run double to break the tie. Asencio followed with a two-run single, making it 8-4.

Hedges knocked in Asencio with a single. Fort Wayne scored its final run on an infield single by Stubblefield.

Whitmore added a solo home run in the seventh inning. Asencio hit a two-run home run in the ninth.
