Friday is count day at Indiana schools. That’s the day school officials report average daily membership to the Indiana Department of Education for funding purposes.

A second academic-year count day is set for Feb. 15, the result of legislation establishing multiple count dates and terminating the current school funding formula effective July 1, 2013.

Legislators plan to compare numbers from this week and next February to consider how and when to adjust funding.

Enrollment information will give a better indication of how many students have been lost to charter and voucher schools.

Omnibus lecture

Actress and humanitarian Mia Farrow kicks off IPFW’s Omnibus Lecture series Wednesday, speaking on the crisis in Darfur.

“With Knowledge Comes Responsibility” is the title of her address, based on her work as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador. Most of her humanitarian efforts have been aimed at raising awareness of the genocide in Darfur, Chad and the Central African Republic.

McMurtry lecture

Civil War scholar Gary Gallagher will be the featured speaker at the 2012 R. Gerald McMurtry Lecture sponsored by the Friends of the Lincoln Collection of Indiana and the Friends of the Allen County Public Library.

Gallagher is the John L. Nau III professor of history at the University of Virginia and the editor and author of more than a dozen books about the Civil War. His lecture is “A Real Lost Cause: The Disappearance of Union from the Memory of the Civil War.”

Transfer station

Citilink will begin using the central transfer station on the corner of Calhoun and Baker streets on Saturday.

The public transportation service will also begin several route changes.

The new 2,700-square-foot transfer station features public restrooms and heated shelters to keep people warm and protected while waiting for the bus.
