Shooter's Comments:

I left early for my assignment to look for features and came across this event where people were donating shoes for the Fort Wayne Rescue Mission in remembrance of 9/11/01. They were arranging the shoes in the shapes of the two towers that fell and were looking to collect 2,996 pairs of shoes - which is the number of victims from the World Trade Center.

I wanted an aerial perspective to show the hundreds of shoes, so I put my camera onto a monopod and hooked up a pocketwizard. I chose the 14 mm lens and a deep depth of field and put the lens in manual and set the focus to infinity. I held it up above my head, triggering it wirelessly, when a firefighter came and donated a pair of boots. I was in the right place at the right time.
