High schools

Luers falls in battle of top soccer teams

– In a battle of the top two teams in the Class A boys soccer poll, No. 1 Guerin Catholic beat No. 2 Bishop Luers 1-0 on Saturday at the Fort Wayne Sport Club.

The Golden Eagles (12-0-2) got a goal from Tommy Hinkebein late in the second half to hand the Knights (10-1-1) their first loss of the season. Guerin Catholic’s Jay Kaskie had four saves to help preserve the shutout.

Cross country

WEST NOBLE INVITATIONAL: Homestead won the girls team title with 80 points, while Columbia City’s Samantha Roush was the individual winner in 19:07.52. Leo’s Lauren Hamilton was second in 19:15.55.

Central Noble’s Ryan Smith won the boys race in 15:47.78, while Goshen was the top team.

NEW PRAIRIE INVITATIONAL: The Concordia boys finished second in the Class 2A division with 92 points.

The Cavaliers went 1-2 in the race with Zach Panning (15:27) beating out teammate Jacob Reinking (15:58.4). Warsaw’s Jacob Poyner (15:35.7) won the 3A division race, with the Tigers finishing second with 104 points.

For the girls, Concordia was second in 2A with 125 points, with Marina Konow (18:48.1) getting second for the Cadets. In 3A, Warsaw’s Ashley Erba (17:14.1) was second.

Boys tennis

CANTERBURY INVITATIONAL: Canterbury went 3-0 to win its own tournament. The Cavaliers beat Penn and Culver 4-1 and Angola 5-0 to improve their record to 13-0.

HOMESTEAD INVITATIONAL: Bloomington South won the team title with 33 points, with Floyd Central (26) coming in second. Homestead (20) was fourth, Bishop Dwenger (16) fifth and Concordia (0) seventh.

Volleyball

CANTERBURY INVITATIONAL: Blackhawk Christian won the tournament with wins over Southern Wells, Bluffton and Canterbury. The Braves beat the Raiders 25-23, 25-7, the Tigers 25-22, 25-15 and the Cavs 25-15, 25-18.

LEO INVITATIONAL: DeKalb won the team title. The Lions were second, Angola third and West Noble fourth.
