What makes a leader: “A leader is someone that can lead, direct or influence others in a positive manner. Someone who people trust and believe will lead them in the right direction to achieve desired results,” Hamrick said.

Leadership traits you most value: Honesty, fairness, values, self-reflection and self-confidence

Best leadership book you’ve read: “From Values to Action” by Harry Kraemer. Hamrick said she heard about the book while attending a convention in Indianapolis and that it coincides with her mind-set. “You can do a lot of reflection, but unless you put it into action, there’s not a lot you can do,” she said.

Role model(s) and why: Her mother, Alma Enterline Rearick, who is now deceased. She “was the best role model I could have ever had,” Hamrick said. “She was a wonderful mother who would have given her soul to my sister and I. She was truly a lady, a wonderful mentor for several of her sisters and children, had great faith and loved life.” Another role model is Mother Teresa, who ministered to the sick, the poor, orphaned and the dying. “She worked with people who had leprosy and tuberculosis, and she worked in soup kitchens, orphanages and schools,” Hamrick said. “She worked for the poorest of the poor.”

Describe one leadership challenge and how you resolved it

: “There was a need in the community for someone to step up to the plate to be president of an organization. No one wanted to take the challenge, so I did and received a lot of experience and knowledge. I approached it with different ideas, and actually I don’t know if we would have had a chapter, because no one wanted to step up. … It was a challenge to make things better and I really like challenges, so I enjoyed that.”

What are your goals: “To continue helping the homeless and to live my life to the fullest. To be there for my family and enjoy my grandchildren and great-grandchildren.”

Hobbies: Collecting bells and traveling. Hamrick also loves flowers and to work in the yard.
