SOUTH BEND — A community group in South Bend that has turned vacant lots into vibrant gardens is now trying to raise enough money to build a greenhouse that will allow the nonprofit organization to operate year-round.

Unity Gardens founder Sarah Stewart tells the South Bend Tribune says the group wants the greenhouse to use solar energy and heat from composting. She hopes the greenhouse becomes a teaching tool about sustainability.

Stewart is hoping Unity Gardens will win one of several $10,000 prizes being given away by The Chase Bank Community Giving, a part of the J.P. Morgan Chase banking system.

The contest requires Facebook to use and awards money to organizations that receive the most online votes. Voters are only allowed to vote once for each project.
