Bishop Luers announced Monday that Steve Keefer will coach the Knights for the remainder of the 2012 football season. An athletic director has not yet been appointed.
Matt Lindsay was fired Sunday as the school's head football coach and athletic director.
Keefer coached the Knights to a record of 64-27 from 1979 to 1986, and won the 1985 Class 2A state championship, the school's first of 10 titles. He also coached at Bellmont from 1988 to 1993, compiling a 15-43 record. In recent years, he has been a Luers assistant.
Lindsay served as an assistant coach for Keefer, who has been on Lindsay's staff recently as well.
Keefer is the husband of Luers principal Mary Keefer.
Monday's practice was closed, but Keefer was expected to address the media afterward.
The school said in a news release Sunday that Lindsay's employment was terminated because of "violations of school and Diocesan policies, and his violations of his employment contract obligations."
Lindsay, a 1973 Luers graduate, had been with the school for 33 years. He was the football team's head coach for the past 26 years, winning a state-best nine state championships, and the athletic director for 21 years. Lindsay was placed on administrative leave Thursday.
Matt Lindsay's son, Kyle Lindsay, served as Luers' interim football coach Friday in a 27-7 win over Wayne. There's no word on whether Kyle Lindsay, the team's offensive coordinator, will remain on the coaching staff.
