AUBURN – A county official says the damage isn’t as bad as feared on a nearly 140-year-old wooden covered bridge in DeKalb County that had its roof trusses broken when a too-tall tractor-trailer rig drove through it.

DeKalb County’s insurance agent told the County Council on Monday that the trucking company has been cooperative and seems to want repairs made to the Spencerville Covered Bridge as quickly as possible.

The Star of Auburn reported that county highway Superintendent Eric Patton says bridge repairs are estimated to run about $115,000, compared with a $300,000 figure predicted earlier.

The one-lane bridge about 20 miles north of Fort Wayne has been closed to traffic since last week when the truck tore down several 6-by-6-inch crossbeams, roof supports and metal tie rods.
