Three men hired to work on a cellphone tower were caught trying to steal metal from the site, according to the Noble County Sheriffs Department.
About 8:30 p.m. Friday, an off-duty reserve deputy drove past the tower on County Road 100 North, west of Indiana 9, and saw a vehicle backed up to a nearby building.
Aware there had been several reported thefts at the site, the deputy alerted dispatchers. Officers were sent to the scene, where they found that a large amount of metal had been removed from the facility and placed in the vehicle.
An investigation revealed that the men had been subcontracted to service the tower but were not allowed to remove the metal, which belonged to AT&T.
Misael Vasquez, 46, of Veracruz, Mexico; Manuel Gonzalez, 30, of Monterrey, Mexico; and Jose Munoz, 32, of Chula Vista, Calif., were arrested and booked into the Noble County Jail. They each face a preliminarily charge of felony theft.
The three remained in custody Tuesday night, each with a bail of $25,000.
