Cremation fiasco leads to grave with wrong remains

DAYTON, Ohio – The discovery of the cremated remains of 56 people at a southwestern Ohio home has led to another mystery because the grave for one of those people apparently contained someone else’s remains.

The Dayton Daily News ( reports officials say they might not be able to determine whose cremated remains were improperly buried in Leroy Metcalfe’s grave at the Dayton National Cemetery for more than a decade. Officials examined the disinterred remains this week.

The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office had told Metcalfe’s daughter that his remains were among those found at a home that was under foreclosure and co-owned by a former funeral home director.

The daughter calls the situation “heartbreaking” and says she plans to have Metcalfe’s actual remains interred elsewhere in the cemetery, with a new headstone.
