Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly told reporters Thursday that running back Amir Carlisle will not play this season and will take a medical redshirt.
Carlisle, a transfer from USC, broke his ankle during spring practice and nerve damage has impeded his recovery. He was granted a waiver by the NCAA to play for Notre Dame this year and not sit out a year because of transfer rules.
"We saw some really good things from him, and we don't want to waste him now," Kelly said after practice Thursday, according to Blue & Gold Illustrated. "We're going to shut him down, put him on scout team. Let him be a great guy over there to let our defense prepare and then have him back for three seasons of competition."
