Eyeing IU

Notebook: IU wants to improve defense

BLOOMINGTON– The Indiana men’s basketball team is focused on improving defensively.

The Hoosiers ranked 10th in the Big Ten in scoring defense last season, giving up 66.4 points per game.

“There are a lot of little things you have to do on defense,” sophomore forward Cody Zeller said Tuesday. “We could score last year, there’s no doubt about it (the Hoosiers led the Big Ten in scoring offense, averaging 77.3 points), and I don’t think we’re going to have too much of a problem scoring this year, but defense is going to be the key to as far as how we’re going to go.”

Creek update

Indiana guard Maurice Creek said he’s “full-go” as the season gets closer.

Creek has suffered three injuries since becoming a Hoosier. His freshman and sophomore seasons ended early with separate knee injuries.

He missed all of last season after suffering a ruptured Achilles heel.

“I feel like I’m back to where I should be and getting stronger every day,” Creek said.

Moving on

“The Movement” became a popular phrase when talking about Indiana’s Class of 2012.

Freshman guard Yogi Ferrell said things have changed.

“It’s not really ‘The Movement’ anymore,” Ferrell said. “Now that we’re here, we’re just one complete team and we have one goal in mind and that’s a national championship.”

Making strides

Senior forward Christian Watford has been impressed with the freshmen.

“They have definitely gotten better," Watford said. “The biggest thing I’ve seen is their strength.

“(Strength and conditioning) coach (Je’Ney) Jackson did a great job getting them stronger.”

Watford said the group – Ferrell, Peter Jurkin, Jeremy Hollowell and Hanner Mosquera-Perea – will help with the defense.

“They will create a lot of pressure,” Watford said. “Everybody at practice is helping to get us better defensively.”
