Killer in pick-ax slaying gets 33 years

CROWN POINT, Ind.– A northwest Indiana man who pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter for using a pick ax to kill a man he found sleeping uninvited on his couch has been sentenced to 33 years in prison.

The Times of Munster reported ( ) that before 32-year-old Calvin Peacock agreed to the plea deal with Lake County prosecutors, he had been facing a murder charge in the death of Kevin Sperry of Gary. Sperry had entered Peacock’s Gary home unannounced in October 2009.

Peacock said Sperry had previously stolen and sold a shotgun belonging to Peacock that his grandfather had given him as a gift.
