City clinic returns steroid in recall

– A local clinic identified by the state Department of Health as having tainted back-pain injections said it has sent the medication back to the manufacturer as part of a voluntary recall.

The clinic was notified of the voluntary recall Sept. 26 and as directed, returned the product for further examination. The lot number of the steroid the Fort Wayne clinic received was not identified as contaminated but was near vials that had been, said Donna Del Priore, the clinic’s marketing manager.

“Fort Wayne Physical Medicine would like to clarify that although FWPM did receive medication from one of the voluntary recalled lots, at no time has any patient under FWPM’s medical care received methylprednisolone acetate by epidural injection,” said Del Priore said in a statement.

She said that the clinic uses the medication for joint injections, not epidurals.

But state Department of Health spokeswoman Amanda Turney said patients receiving any injection including spinal and joint could be infected if one of the identified lots was used.

Staff at the local clinic will be available to answer questions from patients during regular business hours at 436-9337. Fort Wayne Physical Medicine was started in 2000 and provides physical medicine, pain management and physical therapy services.
