Fallen city officer marked

Friday marked 12 years since the death of Brad Matteson, the last Fort Wayne police officer killed in the line of duty.

The tragic anniversary was remembered by displaying his photo at a police memorial garden at the corner of Fairfield Avenue and Baker Street.

His photo will be displayed until the next anniversary of an officer’s line-of-duty death, according to an email from Jerry and Linda Vandeveer, a couple who maintain the garden.

Matteson, 43, died in 2000 after his squad car was struck by a tractor-trailer rig at East State and Coliseum boulevards. He left behind a wife and three children.
