Firefighters miss body in burned Indianapolis apartment

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indianapolis Fire Department is apologizing for not finding the body of a man inside a burned apartment that wasn’t discovered until a month later.

A police detective found 47-year-old Darrin Anderson’s body on Sept. 3 after managers of the apartment complex called police about a bad odor coming from the unit, which was badly damaged in an Aug. 5 blaze.

Fire Department Deputy Chief Ken Bacon tells WISH-TV that firefighters didn’t check under debris in the kitchen where the fire started.

Anderson was dating the woman who rented the apartment. She wasn’t home the night of the fire, which was ruled accidental.

Karla Jones says she filed a missing person report about her brother and is frustrated that it took so long to find his body.
