Cincinnati’s Baker returns to San Francisco

– Minus his old signature toothpick, Cincinnati’s Dusty Baker leaned against the batting cage intently watching his players just as he did for a decade managing the Giants.

Baker is back in the Bay Area for the playoffs, 10 years after he almost won a World Series with San Francisco. These days, he is conserving energy after a recent 11-game absence because of a mini-stroke.

Sometimes Baker still feels the sting of that near-miss, even now, two managerial stops removed from his first career gig as a skipper in the place he has long called home. Today, Baker figures to be cheered by fans at AT&T Park who still love him when the Reds open the playoffs against the Giants.

Francona meets with Indians

Terry Francona, the former Phillies and Red Sox manager, who has spent the past season working as a TV broadcaster, interviewed Friday to be the Indians’ next manager.

Francona spent most of the day in meetings with Indians owner Paul Dolan, general manager Chris Antonetti and other members of Cleveland’s front office.

Francona’s interview came one day after the Indians met with Sandy Alomar Jr. about their managerial opening.

Red Sox eye Farrell for manager’s job

Toronto manager John Farrell has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Bobby Valentine as Boston’s manager.

Farrell has a year left on his contract and the Red Sox would have to discuss with the Blue Jays compensation to make him available.

Cubs plan to move Wrigley wall OK’d

The Cubs received permission from the Commission on Chicago Landmarks to add seats at Wrigley Field.

The commission said Cubs officials can move a brick wall at Wrigley Field three feet closer to home plate so 56 more seats can be installed.
