Fire hits Fort Wayne house

FORT WAYNE – Two adults and a child were able to escape a house fire Tuesday afternoon on the city's south side.

Fort Wayne firefighters were called 125 E. Suttenfield St. about 1:50 p.m., according to a written statement issued by the department. When they arrived, heavy smoke and fire were coming from the front porch area.

The residents were inside at the time of the fire, saw the blaze and got out before fire crews arrived, the statement said.

The fire extended to the exterior of the house and the attic, the statement said, but the fire and water damage were moderate. The smoke damage was described as "heavy."

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and the fire department said it was unable to immediately determine whether the two-story house had a working smoke detector.
