The Fort Wayne Fire Department has a slew of events planned for Fire Prevention Week, which runs through Saturday.
This year’s theme, created by the National Fire Prevention Association, focuses on urging residents to Have Two Ways Out! of their home should a fire begin.
Tips from firefighters include:
Making a map of the home and marking a door or window that can be used to get out; choosing a meeting place outside and in front of the home for everyone to gather; keeping the escape plan on the refrigerator and practice taking that route; testing smoke alarms; and making sure all emergency numbers are written on the escape plan.
Other local events this week include:
The 66th annual citywide fire drill will take place Wednesday, with every school participating.
City fire crews from stations 2, 9, 11 and 12 will go door-to-door Saturday checking and installing smoke detectors. ZIP codes for those areas are 46806, 46807 and 46816. Those in need of a smoke detector but not in those neighborhoods can call the fire department at 427-1478.
Several stations will have open houses from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. this week. Today, it’s Station 19 at 10116 Covington Road. Station 1 on Main Street will have its open house Wednesday, Station 15 at 1415 Northland Blvd. will have one Thursday and Station 12 at 6901 S. Anthony will have one Friday.
