McGill honored by Summit League

The Summit League selected IPFW volleyball player Tessa McGill (Muncie) and IUPUI men's soccer player Kyle Hyland (Bay Village, Ohio) as the Female Athlete of the Month and as the Male Athlete of the Month for August/September.

McGill earned the honor after leading the Mastodons to

a 15-3 record during the month and first place in the league standings.

The senior set a school record with 28 digs in a three-set match in the season-opening win over Murray State on Aug. 24. Four days later, she led the Mastodons to their first victory over Ball State (3-1) since 2007 with 24 digs and a career-high six assists. She set a season-high 29 digs in a five-set loss at Michigan State (receiving votes in the national poll) and tied that mark twice in wins against IUPUI (Sept. 18) and North Dakota State

(Sept. 29).

A two-time Defensive Player of the Week this season, McGill is

tied for second in league history with seven career defensive awards. She earned all-tournament team honors at the Hyatt Place Fort Wayne/IPFW Invitational and led the league in digs (392) and digs per set (6.03) for the month. Her digs per set rank fourth in the nation and she finished the month ranked second in Fort Wayne history and fifth all-time in Summit

League history with 1,961 career digs.

Hyland captured the Male Athlete of the Month award after leading the league in goals scored. His eight goals put him in a tie for sixth place in the country through September.
