South Adams boys win cross country sectional

– Brody Shane showed the field his heels, and South Adams followed suit.

Both wound up at the top of the podium Tuesday in the Bellmont boys cross country sectional, with Shane (16:57.4) beating Brent Bales of Norwell (17:04.8) by not quite eight seconds to lead the Starfires to an easy victory over runner-up South Side.

South Adams finished with 41 points to the Archers’ 74, as Joel Hawbaker, Sawyer Miller and Simon Sprunger backed Shane by finishing sixth, seventh and 11th.

Andrew Fenstermacher led South Side with a fourth-place finish (17:25.0).

Boys cross country

WEST NOBLE SECTIONAL: Host West Noble put two runners in the top five and three in the top 11 to win the team title with 54 points. DeKalb was second with 96. West Noble’s Brandon Arnold (16:30.28) and Jonathan Weimer (16:52.14) finished fourth and fifth. Prairie Heights’ Nicholas Lagemann won.

MARION SECTIONAL: Huntington North put four runners in the top eight to win the team title with 39 points. Cordell Lewis was third (16:35.62), Charlie Mettler sixth (17:00.50), Jacob Ambriole seventh (17:08.06) and Matt DeWitt eighth (17:18.28). Northfield’s Caleb Augustus won the individual title. Huntington North won with 39 points.

Girls cross country

BELLMONT SECTIONAL: Hannah Aschliman (20:12.8) and Jessie Best (20:22.7) finished second and third to spur Norwell to the team title. The Knights finished with 58 points. Bellmont was second (73). The individual champion was Brenda Diaz of New Haven, who beat Aschliman by 32 seconds.

WEST NOBLE SECTIONAL: The 1-2 punch of Anna Aldrich and Abby Hostetler spurred Fremont to the title. Aldrich won in 18:33.03 and Hostetler was second in 19:13.06. Fremont finished with 64 points, outdistancing second-place East Noble by 13 points.

MARION SECTIONAL: Hannah Stoffel (19:53.56), Robyn Karst (20:01.84) and Kayla Patrick (20:23.50) finished fourth, fifth and sixth to lead Huntington North to the team title with 35 points. The Vikings placed four runners in the top 10 to easily outdistance runner-up Eastbrook. Shallen Lenhart of Oak Hill (19:04.56) won the individual title.

Volleyball

CONCORDIA 3, BLACKHAWK CHRISTIAN 1: The Cadets spotted Blackhawk the first game but then roared back to win 21-25, 25-17, 25-18, 25-18. Tionna Williams led the Cadets with 23 kills and three blocks.

GOSHEN 3, CANTERBURY 0: Kelsey McDonald had 14 kills, Julia Weigand 11 and Taylor Estes 10 for Canterbury in its 30-28, 25-22, 25-23 loss.

LEO 3, NORTH SIDE 1: The Lions got 24 kills and 15 digs from Brittney Miller to beat North Side 18-25, 25-16, 25-23, 25-18.
