Irish land in top 5

Notre Dame rose again in the polls, and it will find out where it stands tonight in the hunt for a BCS bowl berth.

The Irish, who improved to 6-0 with Saturday’s 20-13 overtime win over Stanford, moved to No. 5 in the Associated Press Top 25 and the USA Today coaches poll today. Notre Dame was ranked No. 7 in both polls last week.

Notre Dame’s top-five position in both polls is the highest the program has been since the week of Sept. 10, 2006. The Irish were No. 2 in the AP Top 25 and No. 3 in the coaches poll that week.

Stanford dropped from to No. 22 from No. 17 in the AP poll and fell to No. 23 from No. 17 in the coaches poll.

The first BCS standings of the season will be released tonight.
