Irish picked to finish 3rd in Big East

The Notre Dame men's basketball team was picked to finish third in the Big East preseason coaches poll today.

The Irish received one first-place vote in the poll and are behind Louisville, which received 14 first-place votes, and Syracuse.

Notre Dame forward Jack Cooley was named to All-Big East first team by the coaches.

The 6-foot-19, 244-pound senior ­averaged 12.3 points and 8.9 rebounds last season, when he was named the Big East's most improved player.

Notre Dame guard Jerian Grant was named a preseason honorable mention. The 6-5, 185-pound junior averaged 12.3 points and a team-high 5 assists last season as the Irish went 21-12 overall and 13-5 in the Big East.

The Irish were also ranked No. 23 in the preseason USA Today-ESPN coaches poll that was released today.

Notre Dame was eliminated in the second round of the NCAA tournament last season.
